Turin, a city of history
The history of Turin begins in the third century BC, when the first
tribes of Taurini settled along the banks of the river Po. During the Roman expansion the
town became a border garrison and took the name of Augusta Taurinorum. At the fall of the
Roman Empire Turin, being the main western gate through Alps, got under the rule of Goths,
Longobards and Franks. In 1248 the city was conceded as a feud to the Savoys by Emperor
Frederick II. In the early 16th century, following the unification of all
savoyards provinces, Turin became the capital of the Kingdom of Savoys. In the 17th
and 18th centuries the city was extended. Even now Turin is a distinguished
example of the rationalism of those times urban planning, which was intended to make the
structure of the baroque Savoy capital similar to the old Roman Castrum. In 19th
century, in the wake of unification of Italy, Turin was the first capital of the Kingdom
of Italy from 1861 to 1864, and subsequently displayed a growing inclination for industry.
Today, the historic centre, in which the street layout, architecture and long porticoes
give space to attractive and harmonious piazzas (San Carlo, Carignano, Castello, Maria
Teresa) enables the city to preserve an old-fashioned aristocratic atmosphere. Needless to
say, the Turin cathedral is worldwide famous, as it hosts Christs holy shroud in the
Sacra Sindone chapel. Finally, the symbol of Turin is the Mole Antonelliana. Originally
born as a Jewish synagogue it is the highest brick building in the world.
Egyptian Museum
In 1824, King Carlo Felice of Savoy gave
rise to the Egyptian Museum. The museum has grown in size and importance over the years
and it is now second only to the Museum in Cairo. Twelve rooms house over 30,000 exhibits
including the famous black granite statue of Ramses II
